How To Optimize A Webpage - On Page And Off Page SEO

Optimizing a webpage is the foundation of getting your page ranked organically in the search engines. If you follow these steps carefully, you can get your site indexed and ranked relatively quickly for your keywords, if you don't, you could be working much harder to obtain the same results. Listed below are the things you want to focus on that will get you ahead of your competition, after all, that's the whole point of SEO right?

On page

On page SEO is where it all begins, in fact, depending on your particular niche, sometimes optimizing your on page details alone can get you ranked on the first page of Google. I have seen sites with a zero page rank and no back links beat those with a PR of 2 or 3 just because they had this part perfect. This is a powerful piece to the puzzle!

Domain name - One of the key factors to getting your site ranked is your URL relevance, make sure the domain name of your site contains your keyword within it. If your site is about coffee beans then make sure you have your keyword "coffee beans" within your domain name.

Description - Having a description of your site is very important and allows searchers to get a sneak peek into your site before actually clicking on it. This is somewhat of an advertisement about your site and is placed directly below your page title in the search engines. Make sure you place your keyword in the description area so that Google understands that your site is relevant to that keyword.

Title - Create a catchy title and make sure to include your keyword in the title as well. Some people are able to place the keyword in twice, I recommend doing this only if it makes sense. If the title sounds awkward or is catchier using it just once then don't do it - it's not worth losing the visitor.

Meta Tags - these are keywords that you want your site indexed and ranked for. You assign these words and it is where you should simply state "coffee beans" as term your site is relevant for. You can place numerous words and phrases here, but don't overdo it, insert the most important ones and move on.

Body -you definitely can't take advantage of placing your keyword in all the right areas except for the body, that would be telling the search engines that there may be something deceitful with your site. Don't focus on keyword density either - that is a thing of the past. Google wants to see your keywords in the body of your content, but only if it makes sense. Keyword stuffing doesn't help anyone and certainly not your rankings. Insert your keywords only where it makes sense, make your content consumable and easy to digest, and most importantly, provide unique, quality information. This is what your reader demands.

Off page

The other half to getting ranked organically is off page SEO or link building. What is link building? It's a vague term, but essentially, it is the process of getting other third party sites to link to your site as a relevant and reliable reference for a specific keyword or phrase. There are many ways to do this, some of which are article marketing, social bookmarking, forum marketing, blog commenting and video marketing. All of these methods allow you to place a link pointing back to your site giving you more credibility, relevance and authority in the search engine's eyes.

There are two ways that the search engines measure your links - quantity and quality. Typically the more links you have pointing back to your site, the better. However, that is not always the case. Search engines assign a page rank to all web pages. The page rank, or PR, is given a value between 1-10, 10 being the highest and most trusted value. It is always better to get links from higher PR sites than lower PR sites. In fact, getting just one link from a PR5 site could be more valuable than 100 PR1 sites. The goal is to get as many quality links as possible.

By optimizing your site for both on page and off page factors, you are doing nearly everything it takes to get your site ranked above your competition. Remember, SEO is not in instant traffic generation technique, but it is extremely long lasting and has a much better ROI than most paid forms of traffic.
